The Bluejacket offense paved the way for a 3-0 victory over the Thunder at George Larson Field on Sept. 2, 2008.
"We controlled much of the first half generating 15 scoring opportunities while limiting Zimmerman's chances on the other end to six shots," said Head Coach Sommer Fagerness.
C-I's first goal came 11 minutes into the second half when Kelsey Holmberg set up Maggy Rouse with the goal after charging past the Thunder's defensive line before dropping the ball back to Rouse who shot it past the Zimmerman keeper.
The Bluejackets just missed posting a goal during the closing minutes of the first half when forward Sarah Porta nearly snuck a close-range shot from under the keeper's hands.
Midfielder Gloria Gertz notched her first assist of the season by passing a ball into the space in front of Holmberg. Holmberg shot the ball just out of the reach of the Thunder keeper.
With two minutes left in the match, Holmberg struck again by gathering a pass from defender Emily Carlson. Holmberg broke free from the Thunder defenders and went up against the keeper. "Holmberg aimed low and to the right post and found the back of the net one more time," said Fagerness.
The Jackets ended the second half having shot seven times while converting on three of those chances.
Senior goal keeper Jessica Newstrom had her first shutout of the season and made nine saves. Junior midfielder Allie O'Leary made her first varsity career start and recorded a shot on net as did freshman Tiffany Krueger.
"Defenders Emily Carlson, Sam Samsa, Kirsten Larson and Roxanne Holmberg persisted for 80 minutes and relentlessly battled to pick up the team's first shut out of the season," noted Fagerness. "Newstrom was also named Mississippi 8 athlete of the week for her performance during the Jackets match against Blaine High School, and Rouse was named to the Star Tribune's athlete of the week list for her two goals, one of which was the game winner in the match against St. Francis."
